Dev.Diary 2, Basic Game Mode

Dev.Diary 2, Basic Game Mode

The first step is to decide basic game mode. Currently there are three wargame modes.

1.Point to point Map;

2.Hex Map;

3.Region Map;

By comparing each one of the three, I finally decided to choose Point to point map. Here is the analysis of these modes.

1.Point to Point

This is my favourite style. It can both embody the importance of depth and width in war meanwhile do not make the game too complex for new players.

Further more, this style can directly show the battlefield, close to people’s instinct. This has been the most popular style among my wargame friends. And it is the most easy to introduce new players to game of this style other than the other two kinds mentioned below.

2.Hex Map

Orginated from Rand Company During the Cold War, this is the most detailed and realistic map style for wargames.

But when playing face to face (without computer auto- calculations), it would be a bit too complex to control and calculate so many tokens for nomal players. In this case, this style is only polular in small hard-core groups.

3. Region Map

Another popular wargame mode, abstracting the countries and important battlefields into regions.

When playing this style with my friends, we found that it would become too easy to establish or lose control of a large area. The strategic depth cannot be properly represented, a great war can end very suddenly with sudden luck dice.
